Organization

Organization

One of the most important aspects of recording your family history is organization.  When I began collecting stories about my family's history, I started to realize one way that family histories can become lost or confused.  When I would interview my Grandma and Grandpa, my grandma would get out her address book.  Besides being full of current, tidily written addresses and birthdays, this book also contained various slips of scratch paper with names, years, and other scribblings that took forever to make sense of, if she could ever work out what they meant at all.

Some of the most important advice to give someone who is trying to organize their family heritage is this:  develop a sense of organization.  And don't delay with organizing information once you get it.  Record it within your system of organization right away, while it is still fresh.

And, keep that information in a safe place, and backed up.  Just in case.
